Carcinoma de células de transição da uretra com metástases cardíaca e pulmonar em cão Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Serakides,R.; Rachid,M.A.; Veado,J.C.; Menezes,J.M.C..
A case of urethral carcinoma in 15-year-old mongrel male dog is described. Signs of dysuria, urethral obstruction, tenesmus, pain and cough were mentioned. Clinically, the animal was undernourished and showed signs of pain and bladder repletion during the palpation of the abdominal region. Other complementary exams were made such as routine urinalyses, X-ray, ultrassonography and measurement of blood urea and creatinine. Macroscopically, the mucous membrane of pelvic urethra was somewhat irregular, due to the presence of several small white irregular and ulcerated nodules of imprecise boundaries. Similar nodules were found in the lungs and heart. Histologically, transitional cell carcinoma of urethra with metastasis to lung and heart was detected.

Carcinoma prostático en perro: Informe de un caso Veterinaria México
Campuzano-Granados,Jaime; Mancera-Padilla,Mónica Yunuhent; Reyes-Matute,Alonso.

Larcher, Thibaut; Perrichon, Prescilla; Vignet, Caroline; Ledevin, Mireille; Le Menach, Karyn; Lyphout, Laura; Landi, Laure; Clerandeau, Christelle; Lebihanic, F.; Menard, Dominique; Burgeot, Thierry; Budzinski, Helene; Akcha, Farida; Cachot, J.; Cousin, Xavier.
Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are ubiquitous contaminants that can be present at high levels as mixtures in polluted aquatic environments. Many PAHs are potent mutagens and several are well-known carcinogens. Despite numerous studies on individual compounds, little is known about the toxicity of PAHs mixtures that are encountered in environmental situations. In the present work, zebrafish were continuously fed from 5 days post-fertilisation to 14 months post-fertilisation (mpf) with a diet spiked with fractions of either pyrolytic (PY), petrogenic light oil (LO), or petrogenic heavy oil (HO) origin at three concentrations. A decrease in survival was identified after 3 mpf in fish fed with the highest concentration of HO or LO, but not for PY. All...

Cyclooxygenase-2 expression in epithelial neoplasms and its relevance as a targeted therapy in dogs Ciência Rural
Cunha,Rúbia Monteiro de Castro; Horta,Rodrigo dos Santos; Lavalle,Gleidice Eunice; Araújo,Roberto Baracat.
ABSTRACT: Targeted therapy of neoplasms is an emergent approach in human and veterinary medicine. Cyclooxygenase (COX) is a class of catalytic enzymes related to the formation of inflammatory mediators. COX-2 is expressed constitutively in a few body tissues, but it may be induced in specific pathophysiologic conditions, such as cancer. COX-2 expression in neoplams may be considered a potential predictive factor, due to the possible association of selective COX-2 inhibitors in adjuvant treatments. This scientific communication has the objective to report COX-2 expression in seven neoplasms of dogs and the usage of adjuvant treatment with COX-2 selective inhibitors as an effective and feasible option in cancer treatment.

Decorin is one of the proteoglycans expressed in Walker 256 rat mammary carcinoma BJMBR
Oba-Shinjo,S.M.; Berto,A.G.A.; Passerotti,C.C.; Barbosa,C.D.; Sampaio,L.O..
Proteoglycan and glycosaminoglycan content was analyzed in a model of rat mammary carcinoma to study the roles of these compounds in tumorigenesis. Hyaluronic acid and proteoglycans bearing chondroitin and/or dermatan sulfate chains were detected in solid tumors obtained after subcutaneous inoculation of Walker 256 rat carcinoma cells. About 10% of sulfated glycosaminoglycan chains corresponded to heparan sulfate. The small leucine-rich proteoglycan, decorin, was identified as one of the proteoglycans, in addition to others of higher molecular weight, by cross-reaction with an antiserum raised against pig laryngeal decorin and by N-terminal amino acid sequencing. Decorin was separated from other proteoglycans by hydrophobic chromatography and its complete...

Does the correlation between EBNA-1 and p63 expression in breast carcinomas provide a clue to tumorigenesis in Epstein-Barr virus-related breast malignancies? BJMBR
Ribeiro-Silva,A.; Ramalho,L.N.Z.; Garcia,S.B.; Zucoloto,S..
Several investigators have identified Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) particles in breast carcinomas, a fact that supports a role for EBV in mammary tumorigenesis. The possible mechanism involved in this process is not clear. The present study was carried out in an attempt to determine whether there is a relationship between latent infection with EBV and p53 and p63 expression in breast carcinomas. Immunohistochemistry developed with 3.3-diaminobenzidine tetrahydrochloride was performed in 85 formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded breast carcinomas using anti-EBV EBNA-1, anti-p63, anti-p53, anti-estrogen receptor (ER) and anti-progesterone receptor (PR) antibodies. The cases were selected to represent each of the various histologic types: intraductal carcinoma (N =...

Functions of the extracellular matrix and matrix degrading proteases during tumor progression BJMBR
Liaw,L.; Crawford,H.C..
Cell interactions with extracellular matrices are important to pathological changes that occur during cell transformation and tumorigenesis. Several extracellular matrix proteins including fibronectin, thrombospondin-1, laminin, SPARC, and osteopontin have been suggested to modulate tumor phenotype by affecting cell migration, survival, or angiogenesis. Likewise, proteases including the matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) are understood to not only facilitate migration of cells by degradation of matrices, but also to affect tumor formation and growth. We have recently demonstrated an in vivo role for the RGD-containing protein, osteopontin, during tumor progression, and found evidence for distinct functions in the host versus the tumor cells. Because of the...

Pathogenesis of gallbladder adenomyomatosis and its relationship with early-stage gallbladder carcinoma: an overview BJMBR
Pang,Liwei; Zhang,Yan; Wang,Yuwen; Kong,Jing.
The exact pathogenesis of gallbladder adenomyomatosis is still lacking and some controversies over its diagnosis and treatment exist. Originally recognized as a precancerous lesion, adenomyomatosis is currently recognized by recent studies as a benign alteration of the gallbladder that is often associated with cholecystitis and cholecystolithiasis. Gallbladder carcinoma is an extremely malignant disease with a 5-year survival rate of less than 5%. Therefore, it is important to diagnose, differentiate, and confirm the relationship between adenomyomatosis and early-stage gallbladder carcinoma. However, the early clinical symptoms of adenomyomatosis are extremely similar to those of gallbladder stones and cholecystitis, increasing the difficulty to identify...

TNFa increases in vitro migration of human HPV18-positive SW756 cervical carcinoma cells Biocell
Hidalgo,K.; Rojas,I. G.; Penissi,A. B.; Rudolph,M. I..
TNFa has been associated with both, tumor survival and apoptosis. This cytokine is also involved in promoting cell migration during wound healing and tumorigenesis. SW756 is a HPV18-positive cervical carcinoma cell line, which has been used to study different mechanisms of cervical cancer progression. An in vitro assay of scratch wound healing onto monolayers of SW756 cells was used to assess the effect of TNFa on cell migration into a wound space. It was found that SW756 cells have the ability to migrate, but not proliferate in response to scratch wounding in a serum-free medium supplemented with TNFa. RT-PCR analysis showed that SW756 cells express TNFa mRNA when incubated in medium with and without serum. Wound closure and migration rate of SW756 cells...
